Laws takes top title at National Table Tennis Championships

Adam Laws secured the Men’s Singles title at the Maccabi GB National Table Tennis Championships.

Laws defeated Dov Katz in the final at London Academy in Edgware in a competition that featured more than 50 players from across the country.

The action was fast-paced on a day that saw a number of players who had represented Maccabi GB at the 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel renew rivalries.

Scarlett Anders, Jo Radiven and Dov Katz were among the top performers. Anders, aged 12 and from Whetstone, was in sparkling form in her fourth outing in the competition. She triumphed in the Cadet Singles and Junior Girls Singles – where she beat Maccabiah silver medallist Arianna Di Giammarino - and earned the runners-up place in the Banded Singles, where she was beaten by Jacob Sobel.

Radiven, from Edgware, enjoyed a strong tournament in both singles and doubles. She overcame Anders to win the Women’s Singles, and later added to her tally by teaming up with Michael Gerrard to claim the Mixed Doubles - a title she also won in 2016.

Surrey-based Adam Laws defeated Katz in the final of the Men’s Singles at London Academy in Edgware in a competition that featured more than 50 players from across the country, including 17 newcomers.

Maccabiah veteran Katz, who is 43 and from Mill Hill, produced a series of strong performances throughout the day. He went on to lift the Vets Singles title, as well as the Men’s Doubles crown, for the 10th time. His latest partner was Carl Breindel, who was also victorious in the Junior Boys Singles.

Michael Gerrard also featured prominently, adding the over-50 and 60 singles titles to his mixed doubles crown.

MGB’s Head of Sport Neil Taylor said: “The National Table Tennis Championship has always been a highlight in the Community calendar and this weekend’s event proved this still continues to be the case. Where else could you have enthusiastic nine-year-old novices playing and having fun alongside players who have represented their country at the Maccabiah Games? The atmosphere was electric from the first serve and the energy shone throughout.”
