Wallenberg gets a new place alongside a shul

articlemain

The crescent fronting the Western Marble Arch Synagogue and the Montcalm Hotel in London's West End is to be renamed Wallenberg Place in honour of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved tens of thousands of Jews from the Nazis.

The change of name for the area, currently part of Great Cumberland Place, has been approved by Westminster City Council.

In 1997, the Queen attended a dedication ceremony at the crescent's plaza for a monument honouring Mr Wallenberg which was designed by sculptor Philip Jackson.

The plaza will soon be enhanced by new landscaping and lighting, giving added prominence to the monument, which attracts many visitors. The synagogue's new address will be 1 Wallenberg Place.
