Elstree bids farewell to administrator

articlemain

The man known as “the ultimate encyclopaedia” of Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue has retired after 22 years as administrator.

Barry Winterman was the congregation’s longest-serving staffer, having previously been at Edgware Synagogue in a similar position and worked at the United Synagogue head office. At a kiddush to mark his retirement, members were reminded that when he started at the shul, computers were pretty basic, as was his knowledge of them.

Even today, he uses his head rather than a calculator to tot up sums.

Interim senior minister Rabbi Shimshon Silkin said that “Barry treated each and every member with respect, kindness and understanding and in turn was treated the same way”.

He was presented with a book of tributes from members and a DAB radio.

Mr Winterman will now have more time to indulge his favourite pursuits of supporting Fulham Football Club and walking. He also hopes to find a role where he can promote the use of basic numeric skills in everyday life.
