Over 150 senior cadets from Greater Manchester Army Cadet Force took part in an educational training day about the Holocaust.

The initiative was the first of its type for a county cadet force, according to Colonel Martin Newman, vice-chairman of the Jewish Committee for HM Forces. It featured sessions conducted by locally-based Holocaust survivor Meyer Hirsch and David Arnold, whose mother had fled the Nazis on a Kindertransport.

In a message of support, Holocaust Educational Trust chairman Lord Janner said it was “important to remember the horrors of the past and to battle against their recurrence”.

Colonel Newman, who is also a special adviser at the Ministry of Defence Youth and Cadet Policy Unit, pointed out that “citizenship, social responsibility and community awareness is an increasingly important part of the cadets’ training syllabus. I would like to see more cadet units take up this idea.”
