Traub keeps MAL on course for title No. 2

MAL consolidated their position at the top of the Maccabi Sunday League, with a three-wicket against Belmont & Edgware.

Lively spells from Yoav Lebens and Tony Wise accounted for Alex Ziff and Simon Durban. Daniel Geey joined Warren Averbuch with the score on 16-2, and set about a rebuilding job.

Geey (33) was removed by left-arm spinner Grant Traub but several overs of carnage from master blaster Richie Weinburg kept BECC in the game. His innings of 62 came from only 27 balls, featuring five sixes and four boundaries.

Aided by skipper Ryan Monk, the score moved to 164 but good death bowling from Simon Levy and Mark Landau saw the hosts finish on 197-8.

In reply, MAL lost leading scorer Landau to a terrific diving catch at square leg by Warren Averbuch. Danger man, Yoav Lebens, together with Gideon Caller, moved the score to 70.

Wickets continued to tumble with Lebens dismissed for 73 off 62 balls to leave MAL 149-5. The experienced heads of Wise and Traub (27 not out) took MAL to the brink of victory with their total boosted by 45 extras as they won with more than two overs to spare with Traub unbeaten on 27.

South Manchester look set to retain the NJCL title after a second demolition of Sedgley Park this season.

Huddy Lieberman (4-3) and Jonny Lieberman (3-7) effectively ended the contest before it began. An excellent of legspin from Sam Hassan (2-1) and a wicket for Rabinovitz ended the Sedgley innings on just 23.

South took just four overs to reach their target and claim maximum points, retaining their unbeaten league season.
