Dean Furman has become the second Jewish player to join League 1 Oldham Athletic in just over a week after signing a two-year contract.

The South African born midfielder rejected a new contract with Scottish champions Rangers who agreed a compensation package with Simon Corney’s club.

A product of the Chelsea academy, Furman enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Bradford last season. Explaining his decision to leave Ibrox, he said: “I didn’t think I was going to get as much football as I’d have liked. The chance to join Oldham came up and straight away I got a good feel for the club.

“I feel it’s time for me to move on because I enjoyed getting first-team football at Bradford. I’ve got no guarantees I’ll be playing every week and it’s up to me to prove I’m good enough for this team.”

Managing Director Simon Corney confirmed: “Dean was the manager’s top priority.” As for the boss, Dave Penney said: “You can’t argue with Dean’s pedigree – Chelsea and Rangers while also being on the brink of breaking into the South African team. He’s a good age, got some good level experience with Bradford and is ready to step up a level with us.”
