Up to 11 people may have been killed in Israeli air strikes on Iranian targets within Syria on Wednesday morning, a response to rocket fire upon the Golan Heights the previous day.

The IDF said surface-to-air missiles, weapons warehouses and military bases belonging both to President Bashar al-Assad and to the pro-Iranian Quds force were among the dozens of targets hit.

“The attack was carried out in response to the launching of rockets by an Iranian force from Syria's territory into Israel, intending to strike Israeli territory,” the IDF said in a statement.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights opposition activist group told AP that 11 people had died.

Syria´s state news agency Sana said two civilians were killed by shrapnel when an Israeli missile hit a house in the town of Saasaa, southwest of Damascus.

It comes after four rockets were fired from Syria into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights on Tuesday.

The projectiles were intercepted by the IDF’s Iron Dome missile defence system and no damage was caused.

“I made it clear that whoever harms us — we will strike back,” Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

“This is what we did tonight against military targets of Iran's Quds Force and Syrian military targets in Syria, after rockets were fired at Israel last night."
