An IDF veteran from north London is hoping to raise enough funds to create a short satirical film exploring the different facets of British Jewish life.

Jonah Moore, 24, served as a lone soldier in the Israeli army between December 2015 and August 2016  and is now a screenwriter.

The short film - to be called Soldier Boy - would centre on David, a Jewish Londoner who enlisted in the Israeli army but secretly decides to leave the force.

Upon his return to London, David is greeted by gushing relatives and a surprise party in honour of his service and struggles to come clean about his secret.

Mr Moore, producer 31-year-old Keren Shefet and director Tal Cicurel hope to start shooting in the winter.

Their Indiegogo campaign has raised more than £1,500 of their £10,000 goal.

The film would not “attempt to debate any of the moral questions of the IDF,” the appeal says.

The project would seek to “provide an amusing insight into the culture of British Jewry”.

“Through the medium of humour, we hope this film will encourage all minority voices to be listened to within the Jewish community and raise meaningful discussions about Jewish identity around the diaspora,” the appeal says.

Ms Shefet, who grew up in Israel, said she was aware of the "integral part the millitary plays in our culture."

"In general, the military system produces many conflicts, both within and outside of it, but people never truly comprehend the experience until they are actually in it.

"Despite the wide variety of people's perceptions of Israel and the IDF, this story reminds people that these 'soldiers' are humans who struggle with challenges and difficulties.

"We are using the military to tell a personal story about an identity crisis and to raise various voices and questions about the connection to Israel that we shouldn't be taking for granted," she told the JC.
