Joint meeting with the Uyghur World Congress will call for action to protect Muslim minority

The Board of Deputies is to hold a joint meeting in Parliament with representatives of the Uyghur people later this month to urge protection of China’s beleaguered Uyghur Muslim minority.

The mass detention of Chinese Uyghur Muslims in special camps in China has caused international outrage.

Edwin Shuker, Board vice-president, who will be one of the speakers at the joint event with the World Uyghur Congress, said, “Interfaith cooperation is extremely important, in the struggle against the oppression and persecution faced by the Uyghur people in China.

“Because of our history, British Jews will refuse to turn a blind eye to the persecution of an entire community, anywhere.”

Other speakers are set to include the government’s adviser on Islamophobia Qari Asim, Rahima Mahmut from the World Uyghur Congress and the Senior Rabbi of the Reform movement, Laura Janner-Klausner.

Dolkan Isa, president of the Congress, thanked the meeting’s organisers “for pushing forward with this event against the oppression and persecution faced by the Uyghur people in China. In this time of grave crisis, it is essential to build a stronger cooperation between different groups. Uyghurs need global support from all human beings.”
