The original production was a financial disaster for the composer

Twang!!, which was originally written by Lionel Bart and Harvey Orkin over 50 years ago, is to be performed at London's Union Theatre. The comic celebration of Robin Hood and his merry men has been updated and will make its professional debut in April.

Twang!! is a musical which Bart wrote after his huge hit, Oliver! It opened at the Shafesbury Theatre in December 1965 and closed only 43 performances later - a disastrous box-office failure and a financial disaster for Bart.

However, in 2008, nine years after Bart died, his estate commissioned Julian Woolford to write a new book for the musical. It is this version which will be performed at the Union Theatre, running from April 11 to May 5.

Bart's first professional musical was 1959's Lock Up Your Daughters, and he also wrote Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be and in 1960, Oliver! which was hugely successful. The film version later won six Oscars, including best picture.
