At Magen David Adom centres around the nation, queues formed as Israelis volunteered to give blood. So many thousands of people turned up that on Sunday MDA asked volunteers to stop coming - apart from those with ‘O’ type blood.

An MDA spokesman said: “Due to a tremendous overload of people wanting to donate blood, we request to stop coming for now. We will notify you when it will be possible to come and donate blood again.”

Hundreds of Israeli soldiers, called up at short notice sang the Israeli national anthem Hatikvah - the reservists were reporting for duty at a base in southern Israel.

And a reservist called up to fight watched his son’s bris by Zoom, supported by his fellow soldiers. The baby’s name is Shmuel Lev.
