Bennett's warning as Israeli Covid cases spiral

Prime Minister says further restrictions could be reintroduced and urges mask wearing in enclosed spaces

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has warned that more restrictions will be brought back if the coronavirus infection rate continues to spiral.

It was reported today that Israel has 2,455 active cases, compared to little more than 200 a fortnight ago.

The more transmissible Delta variant was a key factor.

Mr Bennett urged citizens to observe the recently reinstated rule to wear masks in enclosed spaces. If cases continued to rise, “we will consider reinstating some of the restrictions of the 'Green Passport’,” a reference to the limitations on those who have not been vaccinated.

Although praising Israeli teenagers who had been vaccinated, the number was not enough and he urged others to get their vaccinations as quickly as possible as a significant proportion of Israel's vaccine stock is due to expire by the end of July.
