Non-Jewish supporters of the tiny Grimsby congregation have helped raise the £12,500 for repairs to its synagogue roof, which was on the point of collapse.

The 124-year-old community, which has just six active members, will next week hold its first Friday-night service since the completion of the work.

Shul president Leo Solomon said: “There was no government funding but we received contributions from Jewish and non-Jewish people in the area — it’s remarkable.

“We don’t have enough people to make a minyan. It would be lovely if we could expand.”
In its 1930s’ heyday, the Grade II-listed synagogue had 400 members.
