Brushing up on home interiors in Gateshead

articlemain

Artworks depicting the interiors of Gateshead Jewish homes are the core of a local exhibition by London-based artist Naomi Alexander, showcasing her work over the past 50 years.

Running until October 31, Domesticity is Ms Alexander's second solo exhibition at Shipley Art Gallery.

The previous was Once Upon a Time in Lithuania in 2013, during which she was invited to lead an inter-generational heritage art project co-ordinated by the Jewish Community Council of Gateshead.

She worked with a number of girls' schools and the Zayis Raanon Women's Social Group from the Charedi community. As a result, she was invited into a number of homes to paint typical interior scenes.

The artist has family links with the area as her grandfather was one of Gateshead's earliest Jewish residents. Her late mother, Hazel, a well-known sculptor, was born in Newcastle.

Also on show at the Shipley gallery are works produced by the local community during the heritage art project and it is running art groups for Jewish families to complement the exhibition.
