A permanent exhibition on young Holocaust survivors who found refuge in the Lake District is to quadruple in size after winning Cumbria County Council funding.

From Auschwitz to Ambleside attracted over 40,000 visitors last year to its Lottery-funded premises in Sedbergh, Cumbria, which has archived the story of concentration camp children.

The enlarged premises will incorporate a new gallery and events space. The story of the “lost” village of Calgarth Estate — built in 1941 for aircraft workers but used to house the refugee children after the war — will also be told.

Exhibition founder Trevor Avery said: “Visitors from around the world are immensely touched by the story of the children and the unique Lake District community which welcomed them.”
