An ambitious plan to build a four-storey education centre housing Aish and other charities in Hendon cleared a major hurdle on Tuesday, winning unanimous approval from a Barnet Council planning committee.

The £20 million building is to be erected on the site of what is now the post office in Brent Street and will contain a museum and café. It will also bring together a number of charities under the umbrella of Jewish Futures including Gift and JRoots.

As part of the proposal, an alternative location would have to be found for a post office in the street.

Councillors were particularly struck with the contemporary design for the project.

In the brief public discussion at the online meeting, David Landau, the chairman of education organisation Chinuch UK, who lives nearby, said it would “provide a fabulous and important resource for young adults”.

It would “not serve any particular part of the Jewish community, it is available for everybody”, he said. And the museum and café would be available for the wider community.

“I think this development is excellent and it’s a win-win for everybody.”
