Played at Hartsbourne Golf Club in Hertfordshire, the team competition is calculated upon the aggregate of the best six scores out of eight. This led to a tie and after reverting to calculating all eight scores, WAGOS triumphed. Hartsbourne collected the Abridge Trophy as runners-up.
Recently introduced into the calendar of tournaments organised by the Association of Jewish Golf Clubs & Societies, the Southern Provincial has proved extremely popular with the competitors. It is played under the Stapleford scoring system and the eight players representing each affiliated club/society have to be drawn from handicap categories ranging from low, medium and high, thus affording an opportunity for competitive representative golf to those who would not qualify for the elite tournaments.
The recent exceptional heat was an added factor to the test presented by the course, but overall the scoring was good. Colin Gerstein of Dyrham Park produced the best score of the day, 37 points, to pip David Kaye of WAGOS JGS by one shot.
An AJGCS spokesman commented: “We are pleased our policy of offering a broader palette to Jewish tournaments is proving attractive whether through team competitions for the affiliated clubs/societies or individual golfers.”
