South Manchester Sports set up a second round clash against old nemisis Manchester Maccabi following a 4-2 victory over Sporting Manchester in the Kings Cup.

South went a goal down from a Sporting free-kick, much against the run of play, which shocked the home side into action. Toby Levy missed a chance to equalise, glancing a header just over the bar from some great play from talisman Adam Lavin.

Lavin and Levy combined again, but a good reflex save from the Sporting keeper denied Levy when it seemed easier to miss than score.

South equalised through substitute David Flax, who came on early after captain Mike Stratton was forced off with a calf strain. Flax latched on to a Lavin through ball to slot home with a sliding half volley.

Lavin put South in the ascendency with a trademark finish after some good individual work. Youngster Louis Rawlings then made it three with a headed goal from a corner from Toby Levy.

Sporting put up a fight and pulled one back making it a nervy last 15 minutes, but it was Flax who had the last laugh, plucking the ball out of the air after some good work down the left from Toby Levy, and finishing confidently.

South manager Neil Collins said: "A special mention must go out to Mike Herz, who made his debut between the sticks. Also James Jobling, who made the step up from the second team. James has been excellent all season for Magid's men and thoroughly deserves his chance.

"We look forward to the quarter-finals against Maccabi, after two close games in the league."
