In the first-ever Squash England-sanctioned competition, nine-year-old Elise Lazarus, daughter of Maccabiah titan David Lazarus, and Millfield School scholar Daniel Poleshchuk, 13, eschewed their age groups.
Elise won the Under 13 title, where she could have taken the easier route by playing in the Under 11s and Daniel won the Under 17s whereas he could have played in the Under 15 age groups.
The icing on both cakes was that neither player dropped a game throughout the Finchley Open tournament.
The consensus was that the participation of these two players gave the competition the credibility to make it a permanent fixture on the junior squash circuit.
