Resilient Cats back on track

The Cats returned to winning ways thanks to a double from Yonni Bord and a headed strike from Gary Conway.

Still without absent skipper Adam Luria and an injury list as long as your arm, Catford Maccabi managed to get back on track following last Sunday's reversal with an emphatic 3-1 victory over a resilient Temple Fortune side.

Catford's first-half domination was rewarded with a very well-taken brace from young striker Yonni Bord - the first with a perfectly-weighted through ball from stalwart centre-back Jeff Gotch and the second following a supply by strike partner Jamie Sinai.

Bord might have helped himself to a first half hat-trick, but for a miss hit penalty almost on the stroke of half-time.

At 2-0 down at half time and a stern teamtalk later, TFFC came out like a different team. They enjoyed much better ball retention and played to their strengths.

They worked like trojans to get back into the game and the efforts of their experienced central midfield pairing was rewarded with a superb team goal which was incredibly well-taken by Darren Zitren, lobbing the keeper from an angle into the far corner.

Catford’s back four were excellent during this period and held fast to keep their noses in front. But Fortune’s goal seemed to kickstart the Cats once again and a late flurry of action in and around the Fortune 18-yard box saw the Cats latest signing journeyman Gary Conway (or Paul to his manager) spring like a salmon to nod home assuring Catford of the three points and retaining Catford's position at the top of the table.

Fortune manager Jonathan Cohen said: "I'm a bit disappointed losing, even though Catford are top of the table. Full credit to them to be fair.

"I can see plenty of encouraging signs for the games ahead and we will many more games if we play like we did in the second half."

Man of the match: Centre-back Ryan Kangisser
