Marcelle Lazarus has explained the reason behind her resignation as joint chairperson of Accrington Stanley.

Lazarus, 47, joined the club in July and played a key role in keeping the team’s afloat as they faced a race against time to pay an outstanding tax bill.

Currently recovering from swine flu, Lazarus, a mother of six from Whitefield, said: “It wasn’t what I thought it was going to be and enough is enough. I decided to walk away.

“I was probably a bit daft to join the club in the first place and having been in football for a long, long time, I found myself running around like a nutter for no money at all and had to ask myself why I was doing it.”

She departed just days before the club’s future was secured, and said: “I’m delighted the club was saved. It’s been well worth it.”

As for her next move, she said: “I’ve been approached by another club and definitely want to stay involved in football. It’s my life.”
