HERTS VETS COUNTY CUP
OLD SALVATORIANS 2 MACCABI LONDON 7
Although made to work harder for this victory than the scoreline suggests, a superb midfield performance saw the side dominate proceedings in this game switched last minute to the 3G at Rowley Lane.
Salvatorians are a good, strong and competitive outfit, so it needed Lions to be close to their best to get on top early on. This they were, with A;ex Levack, Corin and Pearl first to pretty much everything. Saul Conway and the lively Cash were a constant outlet seeing the hosts create a plethora of chances that through a combination of good goalkeeping and some wayward finishing meant the score remained deadlocked for the forst quarter of the match.
The pressure finally told when great combination work on the edge of the box saw Steve Summers face to face with the keeper, his first goal for the club courtesy of an exquisite dink over the on-rushing stopper.
Salvatorians had plenty of strong players and asked questions of the Maccabi back-line, and when they recycled the ball after an initial break had been thwarted, grabbed an equalising goal courtesy of a superb header that found the top corner.
This certainly woke up the home side, and after Rob Glass was denied first by an off-side flag and then a superb save they gave themselves the breathing space they deserved with two goals in quick succession shortly before the break, first Pearl curling an absolute rocket into the net from the edge of the box before Cash was on hand to make it 3-1 from close quarters.
With the wind at their backs, Salvatorians tried to get back in the game, but solid defending ensured Maccabi kept them at arms length and, as the game approached the hour mark, stretched their lead through Corin. Although Salvs were gifted a second by an error from Dan Jacobs, this was nothing more than a blip as the hosts drove forward at will as the visitors tired.
Cash, Pearl and the impressive Corin all added to their personal tallies, and only three or four excellent saves denied further goals.
A good run out for the group and safe progress to the next round of what is always a very tough competition.
