I'll fly high with Pelicans, says Mekel

Gal Mekel believes he can take New Orleans Pelicans to the next level.

Mekel, 26, made his debut in the 120-100 defeat to the LA Clippers but then helped the Pelicans beat the LA Lakers 104-87. He scored his first two points for the club and made four assists during a 12-minute cameo.

The Israeli was released by the Dallas Mavericks in October despite an impressive start in the NBA last season.

He was almost joined the Indiana Pacers last month, but the deal fell through due to visa problems, which have now been resolved.

Mekel said: “I’m really hungry to play and I really believe I can help this team.

"I had a great pre-season and a great game against the Pelicans. At the point guard position, I can run a team, get guys open, help on defence, and create shots.”

Struggling at the foot of the Western Division, the Pelicans must be regretting the decision to release Omri Casspi, who was signed in the summer and released to the Sacramento Kings in October. The Israeli scored 22 points when the Kings beat the Pelicans last month.

Next week Mekel will meet David Blatt’s Cleveland Cavaliers who have won their last seven matches.

The most recent success was played out in front of a star-studded crowd, which included the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Beyonce and JayZ. The royal couple were each presented with Cavs shirts, including a little one for George.
