London Maccabi Lions U10 White progressed to the final of the WFL League Cup with a dramatic 3-2 win away at Edmonton Rangers Cobras, with a winning goal from Harry Dryan with the very last kick of extra time.

The Lions, who play in the WFL top Red Division, had led 2-0 at half time through goals from Jordan Copans and Sammy Garcia, both from corners from Ben Lever, but they were made to pay for a string of missed chances when Edmonton hit back with two goals in the last five minutes of the second half to take the game into extra time.

Edmonton had the benefit of a squad of 11 to rotate for the seven-a-side format, but the Lions had only eight due to illness and injury. However, the Lions showed incredible maturity and determination to maintain their shape against a very physical team and continued to play their passing game with an impressive level of skill and sophistication.

Late in the final period of extra-time, Edmonton’s lightning quick forwards fashioned a clear chance, but Lions’ goalkeeper Oli Kent managed to keep the ball out. From the resulting corner the ball emerged deep on the left side of the Lions half where Sammy Garcia, a recent signing from the QPR Academy, curled a first time ball with his left foot into the path of the onrushing Harry Dryan who held off two Edmonton defenders to reach the ball first and prod through the legs of the onrushing goalkeeper to win the tie.

There was not even time for Edmonton to restart the match and Lions can now look forward to the League cup final on May 5 at Harvesters Stadium.
