Golden Goodman enjoys dream debut

articlemain

Wonder kid Richard Goodman made a dream Maccabiah debut by winning the boys juniors 1,500 metres on Day Three at the Maccabiah Games.

Sitting on the heels of the leader after the first lap at Hadar Yosef, the Barnet Shaftesbury Harrier got his tactics spot on as he kicked on run away to leave the chasing pack in his shadow to win with plenty to spare.

Having crossed the line in 4:06:80, a delighted Goodman said: “I was really nervous so to win was really good. I went a bit early but wanted to make sure I didn’t lose my lead. These guys are good but I wanted to stick in and see what happens.

“Before the race, everyone in my hotel was saying that I would win so I’m relieved. Tomorrow I have the 3,000m so I hope to do the same thing.”

Goodman, 16, will depart the Games to compete at the European Youth Olympics. He said: “I’m trying to chase Steve Ovett’s time of 3:48. I’m in shape for a sub 3:50.”

There was more success in junior track and field as the junior girls 4x100m relay team of Sophie Wolfe, Elysse Mendell, Rianna Gurvitz and Hannah Phipson took bronze.

The boys 4x100m team of Charlie Gibson, James Levy, Ben Morris and Saul Heyland finished third in their race but as only three teams entered, they were awaiting news on if a medal would come their way.
