Davis Cup woe for Israel

articlemain

Israel succumbed to a 5-0 Davis Cup whitewash against Romania following a disappointing showing in Sibiu.

With Dudi Sela and Bar Botzer losing their respective Singles matches on Friday, the tie was effectively ended when Idan Leshem and Botzer went down in the doubles.

Israel must now overcome Slovenia in the first round play-off during the summer to maintain their Group 1 status.

Israel's Davis Cup captain Eyal Ran said: "Nobody likes to lose, especially 5-0, but we must learn from our mistakes and move forward because we have a very important game against Slovenia in Israel in July.

"If Amir Weintraub will be fit he is a great Davis Cup player and Dudi is always there for us.

"The young players will improve and this is a critical year for us because we want to stay in Europe-Africa Group 1."
