Big Ben's still a class act

articlemain

Ben Simons is not your stereotypical Spanish striker, but the Faithfold C marksmen certainly made his mark on a break in the Canary Islands.

His manager, David Garson, might’ve been worried when the giant striker booked a family holiday during his team’s final preparations for the new Maccabi GB (Southern) Football League season, but he’d not have worried as I can tell you that the former Boca Barbarians and UJIA front man looked in great nick.

"He has great feet for a big man," shouted Hector, a member of the entertainment team at the Gran Castillo resort in Lanzarote, and he should know, coming from the land of Hugo Sanchez, Javier Hernandez and co.

Although Hector wowed the lasses with his hip-shaking dance moves, he had nothing on Ben who put in some hard yards on the football pitch most days. OK, he did tuck into one or two profiteroles on occasion, but he sweated it out in the sun, making some fleet-footed surges as well as powering home some thunderous strikes.

Ever the team player, he exchanged text messages with gaffer Garson to find out how his team performed in friendly action and he can’t wait to link up with new signing Dan Gordon in what will be one of the most-feared partnerships in the league.
