On Sunday 17th September, virtuoso violinist Maxim Vengerov will give an exclusive performance to support the needy in Israel.
He will play at a gala dinner for the charity, Manna, with a programme including Brahms' Scherzo from the FAE Sonata 6 and Enescu's Sonata No 2.
Born into a musical family in Siberia, Maxim Vengerov, 43, has been playing violin since the age of five when, on his first meeting with a renowned violin teacher, she asked him, "Do you have strength in these hands?" The young boy punched her in the stomach as hard as he could. "Fortunately, she was in a good mood that day and she accepted me as a student!”
Vengerov has been wowing audiences worldwide both as a soloist and with orchestras for over three decades. In the footsteps of his mentors Rostropovich and Barenboim, the multiple-award winner has added conducting and teaching to his ever-growing repertoire and cites jazz, baroque and even rock music as influences.
Manna helps support the immediate relief of poverty in Israel. The charity provides its pre-paid cards, which allow the purchase of food before the chagim, and through restaurants, meals on wheels, youth centres and vocational training courses open to all.
