Lebanon is burning.

January 25, 2011 14:20

While the middle east punditry's attention has been focused on "Pali-leaks", scant coverage has been given to the tumultuous events occurring in neighbouring Lebanon.

Now the country is burning once again. Opponents of Hezbollah (The Army of Allah) and Sunni supporters of former PM Hariri (who was deposed in an effective coup by Hezbollah while visiting President Obama) are rioting in the streets in Beirut. Now, more than ever, the moderate pro-democracy forces in Lebanon need the West's support.

But where is Hillary Clinton? Where is President Obama? Were is Baroness Ashton of Upholland? The silence is deafening.

A brutal and sad reminder of the events in Iran following the elections, where people looked to the US for support and found none. It seems that the West and the US in particular has already given up on the battle for a secure and prosperous world in the 21st century. And meanwhile the powers that be continue to insist that the one functioning democracy in the Middle East is carved up to pander to Islamist demands.
