Thomas Bach should be judged on his actions as president of the International Olympic Committee, not on what he might or might not have done to facilitate a boycott of Israel so far. But it does not look exactly promising. In his role as president of the German-Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he clearly helped the BDS movement — a role which is surely incompatible with the so-called Olympic spirit. That said, his predecessor was hardly an example to be followed, refusing even to consider a moment of silence in 2012 to honour the Israelis murdered in Munich. In truth, the Olympics has always been fuelled by hypocrisy. That hasn’t changed.
