Anti-Israel idiocy

September 03, 2015 10:55

Were there to be an award for political idiocy, there would, of course, be many contenders. But the petition signed, so far, by 95,000 people to have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested on his arrival here next week would be a leading contender. Leave aside the basic facts that, as Prime Minister of one of our key allies, he and Israel will rightly be welcomed with a red carpet, and that the idea he is a war criminal is not so much idiotic as ridiculous. Even if Jeremy Corbyn was Prime Minister, Mr Netanyahu could not be arrested because, quite apart from not having broken any law, there is no legal mechanism for it. The signatories may not be interested in what international or even British law actually says but theirs is nonetheless one of the most pointless petitions in history, since it is impossible for its aims to be met. That said, it serves one purpose. It illustrates the fantasy world in which the Israel haters live - a world in which Hamas is a welfare organisation which simply stands up for the rights of Palestinians, in which Iran is a misunderstood potential ally of the West, and in which the Israelis are war criminals surrounded by would-be peaceniks.
