A Letter from M. Alfred Dreyfus.

On the anniversary of the trial of M. Dreyfus at Rennes,  M. Triareaux, the Senator, who is President of the League of the Rights of Man, sent a letter to the ex-Captain, from whom he has received the following reply :— Cologny, near Geneva, Sept. VX SIK,—On my return from a walk in the suburbs of Geneva I found your letter, which deeply touched me on this sad anniversary of the decision at Rennes against all justice, and in defiance of the evidence. This letter, so generously and so nobly inspired, is at the same time a touching tribute to the cause of justice. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was deeply moved, also, on seeing how you have penetrated my soul and understood how much badness and pain there is still in my life. Assuredly, liberty has been restored to me; I again found my loved ones after so many years of horrible separation. I have found numerous friends unknown while I was still at Rennes, who, faithful to the principles of France, of justice, and of right, had undertaken with so much courage the defence of an innocent man. I lived, however, during five years of horrible martyrdom only for honour. The moral elite to of the iniquity remain ; the internal punishment is still as great as ever ; justice has not been done. The end which I pursue remains, then, the fame until it has been attained : the legal revision of my trial. The League of which you are President has assumed a great and noble task, that of extending a helping hand to all the victims, and I am with you heart and soul in this admirable work of human co-operation and fraternity.  Once more thanks and believe in my devotedness and gratitude A Dreyfus
In 1899 Captain Dreyfus had been pardoned by the French president, but he had to wait until 1906 to be exonerated of the charge of treason.

Some Jewish Members of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles
We have received many letters from Jewish soldiers at the front, for which we have not been able to find space. We exceptionally publish the following letter which has reached us this week. D.E.O.V.R. Camp, Griqualand West. South Africa. Two men killed and wounded, but I am pleased to say that the rebel loss was far greater than ours, in fact, that fight practically quelled the rebellion, as shortly after, the entire commando surrendered to us, and since then we have been marching the entire district, and our column is now split up and are now stationed in various districts to prevent any future rising. We are fortified here, as it is considered probable that De Wet may make his way down here, as we are not far from the Transvaal Border.  We are afraid that we shall not be able to keep the Yomtovim in a strictly Orthodox manner, but of course we shall endeavour to do our best to keep holy the days we Jews hold sacred. As we are at present living on bully beef and biscuits, our table will not very Yomtovdik, but we must make the best of it. Enclosed please find photos of ourselves taken on active service, which, perhaps, you may find of sufficient interest to publish, space permitting. Wishing you and the staff compliments of the season and trusting the New Year will inaugurate an Era of Peace and Prosperity, Newman I. Tobias, Albert  H. Soper, D. Mintz,  Harry Zamek

General election: Accrington
The polling day for the Accrington constituency of Lancashire was originally fixed for Monday next. At the request, however, of Mr. E. Nicholls (the Conservative candidate), who pointed out that the Jewish holiday of Tabernacles was held on Monday, the Mayor of Accrington, who is also the Returning Officer for the district, made arrangements enabling the date of the election to be postponed. Mr. E. K. Nicholls, J.P., is married to Mary, second daughter of the late Mr, Maurice Beddington, J.P.
The following message was received from Sir Samuel Montagu, the Liberal candidate for Central Leeds : “ I hope the Jewish voters will remember that Jewish emancipation was granted by the Liberals, and I urge them, one and all, to vote for the Liberal candidates.”
Accrington’s Liberal candidate was elected
