Pyjama party

articlemain

It's not often I will allocate space to write about a trend that is so fashion (darling!) that you need to be in the business to pull it off, but outdoor boudoir elegance is huge this season and can't go unnoticed. I have found a short cut that works and ensures you can carry off the look whatever your lifestyle. Your main aim is to try to avoid looking like you did when you rolled out of bed.

Admittedly, it's a trend that will turn heads, though often not in a good way. You may even be considered just plain lazy for not having got up early enough to wash and dress yourself, but the fact is the pyjama trend is in full swing in all the big international fashion cities and it's now a sell-out look on the British high street.

This is not to be confused with actual pyjamas being worn as outwear, instead it's PJ-inspired designs specifically made to be shown off and be seen out of the bedroom. That said, there's not much difference in the warmth factor. You'll need a good set of thermals if you are to try this look before warmer days arrive.

Bolder evening colours such as navy and deep purples work better than lighter shades that are best left to when you're lying horizontal. The same goes for prints - avoid vertical stripes at all costs and instead choose heavy floral designs. The outdoor pyjama trend needs height to ensure the hem cuts just above the anklebone. Opt for stilettos in the day, and open-toe shoes for the evening.

If you can't imagine trying this look without a laugh or sneer from friends and strangers, follow my lead and wear a pyjama-style top with your trusty denims or leather skirt. Style it as you would a silk shirt: roll up the sleeves and undo a few buttons to keep the look soft and feminine. Choose silk over cotton for a more polished and professional finish.

Lastly, over-accessorise with dangly necklaces and earrings plus a full face of make-up. This will instantly differentiate your look from bedroom to boardroom.

Sling on a warm overcoat, add a dose of confidence, and you've joined the fashion crew.
