50 shades of spring

articlemain

Colour rules were broken on the catwalks this season with an entire spectrum on show. Dark hues take the reign alongside bright neons. Stark black liner, block-coloured lips and heavy eyes ensured editors, buyers and designers alike were left questioning what next. The usual pretty sorbet accents usually associated with spring had almost vanished into fresh dewy air. Admittedly, a few token almost-bare looks were thrown in at Alexander Wang and Balmain, but our favourite purples, oranges and equally daring metallic shades made a huge (and we think, a stunning) new statement against the sheer and fluid fabrics of the spring/summer 2014 collections. Here's how to venture to the dark side and do spring Goth (ish) without a pastel in sight.

Eyes:

Start now by practicing that perfect eyeliner flick. Winged eyes remain popular as seen at Anya Hindmarch and Roksanda Ilincic, while colourful lids at Chanel and golden metallic at Jason Wu created a dramatic new take on the smokey eye. Accentuated under eye liner is another key trend of the season. Models at Jean-Pierre Braganza and Holly Fulton sported smudged black eyeliner enhanced with false lashes for a doe-eyed 60's look. For a softer alternative, try the new blues- azure, aqua and sapphire shades ensure eyes stand out this season.

Lips:

Bright and bold pouts are staying put this summer. Whether you choose classic red (Jason Wu), this season's must-have orange (DKNY), or pink berry (J JS LEE) you'll be on trend. The finish is also up to your taste – matte, glossy, or lacquered, anything goes.

Nails:

One word: experiment. Your talons are the official place to safely try out a new look. Everything from nudes to neons, half-moon designs to full on nail art is all the craze. Instantly update your look by matching your nail polish to your lipstick or shockingly even your eye shadow.
