Survivor, 98, is sculpted at Jewish Care campus

'Art events help future generations to learn from the Holocaust'

articlemain

Holocaust survivor Freddie Knoller became an artistic subject as sculptor Frances Segelman worked on a bust of the 98-year-old at Jewish Care’s Selig Court apartments in Golders Green.

Watched by family and friends of the subject, Selig Court tenants and Holocaust Survivors’ Centre members, Ms Segelman completed the life-size clay bust in two hours and it will subsequently be cast into bronze. The sculptor’s daughter, Victoria Perloff, painted a portrait of Mr Knoller which was presented to him on the day

Noted for her busts of royalty and celebrities, Ms Segelman (aka Lady Petchey) has done a number with survivors. She said it had been a privilege to sculpt Mr Knoller. “These art events help future generations to learn from the Holocaust.” Mr Knoller said the sitting had been an interesting experience. Ms Segelman was “a fantastic artist and has created an amazing sculpture of me”.
