South London Liberal Synagogue went retro to mark the 80th anniversary of the consecration of its Streatham premises in Prentis Road.
Many congregants dressed as if it was 1939. So did the shul’s Rabbi Nathan Godleman and Liberal Judaism president Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein, who spoke of the special place SLLS occupies in the movement’s affections.
Rabbi Godleman said afterwards: “It was a very enjoyable day and a powerful one too, as we recognised our forebears and committed ourselves to the future.”
The community will celebrate another landmark in September — 90 years since the South London section of the Jewish Religious Union (the original name for Liberal Judaism) developed into the South London Liberal Jewish Synagogue, as it was then known.
