Orient stars enjoy away fixture at Jewish Care home

Footballers' belated Mitzvah Day visit to Redbridge facility maintains longstanding tradition

Leyton Orient footballers Josh Wright and Jordan Maguire-Drew played a very different game to Fifa 20 when they paid a belated Mitzvah Day visit to Jewish Care’s Vi and John Rubens home.

For residents of the Redbridge facility, Subbuteo is the game of choice and the Orient stars took them on.

Jack Winter, 94, said: “It’s nice to see the youngsters come and visit us. I had a few games at the Orient when I played occasionally for Leyton 11s when I lived about 200 yards from the club. I started playing when I was at junior school and I carried on until the war started. After the war, I went back to watching the football and still enjoy watching the game to this day.”

Josh Wright — who said it had been “a lovely afternoon” — is the brother of TV personality and former The Only Way Is Essex star Mark Wright. When Mark Wright appeared on Who Do You Think You Are? he discovered the family had Sephardi ancestry.

Jacklin Stephenson, activity co-ordinator at the home, said the visit continued an association with the football club stretching back almost 20 years. “We are pleased that our local team and the Leyton Orient Trust have such a strong connection with the home. Jordan and Josh are a real credit to the team.”
