Cancer man's story inspires Chai golfers to £60k round

articlemain

An emotional speech by a Chai Cancer Care client spurred the 100 participants at its golf day to raise in excess of £60,000.

Robert Geismar said that three years ago, “out of the blue, I was diagnosed with non-smokers’ lung cancer. It was a terrible shock — I had no prior symptoms.

“Within 10 days, I had half of one lung removed and over the following few months I had courses of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

“By August 2015, the cancer had spread to my brain and I was put into palliative care. I was recommended to come to Chai and I was assessed in September 2015.”

Chai’s home support service “benefited not only myself but also my wife. Having Chai behind me was vital.”

In February 2016, Mr Geismar was offered “a miracle immunotherapy drug which worked wonders for me. After six months the cancer disappeared — an incredible relief.”

The tournament at Hartsbourne in Bushey was hosted by Jo Fogel, Mel Rom, Carolyn Joels and Meryl Rosenberg and the proceeds will go towards the home support service.

Ben Doltis, Jeremy Doltis, Jason Harris and Zac Harris were the winning team members. Michele Massing and Neil Miller took the “nearest to the pin” award.

The golf committee has raised more than £200,000 for Chai over eight years.
