Two Jewish players were recognised at Wingate & Finchley’s end of season awards at the Abrahams Stadium.
Following a successful first season with the North London club, Elliott Green won reserve team player of the year. He said: “I’m ecstatic to win such an award because when I first joined the club I never would have thought I’d get into the team let alone win the player of the year award.”
Described as a rock solid defensive midfielder, he added: “I feel I’ve become a much better and quicker player this season.”
Shai Revivo was named youth team player of the year. He said: “I’m surprised to win the award. I feel we have progressed a lot this year and hopefully we can do even better next season.”
Club captain Craig Ellis reflected on a “disappointing” season for the club who finished 18th in the Ryman League Division One North.
“It’s been a struggle,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of young players coming into the squad and while I’ve been suffering from injuries, I’ve tried to guide them from off the pitch. We are looking forward to next season.”
Looking ahead to next summer, Ellis also expressed his excitement for the Maccabiah Games: “It’s a fantastic experience to play in, and it would be an honour to play and even captain the side.”
Wingate keeper Gavin King was named player of the season.
