Shraga Weinberg missed out on the bronze after going down in three sets against Nicholas Taylor of America in the playoff for third place on Court One at Eton Manor.

The Israeli started well, wrapping up the first set with an ace 6-1, but, in the battle of the left-handers, Taylor upped his game in the second set, breaking Weinberg in his first service game. Weinberg broke straight back, but so did Taylor who opened up a 3-1 lead before going on to win it 6-3.

Taylor raced into a 4-0 lead in the third and final set, but Weinberg showed great character to level at four games each. But a poor service game allowed Taylor to break again and this proof crucial as he went on to clinch the bronze with his first match point.

Weinberg, who is an accountant, told JC Sport: "I played well in the first set but then Taylor changed strategy and I made too many unforced errors. It was very difficult to find a way back but I tried my best."

Beaten 6-0, 6-0 in the semi-final by compatriot Noam Gershony, Weinberg said that the whitewash did not play on his mind going into the game against Taylor.

"I got that result out of my system and it was important to look ahead."

Aged 46, Weinberg was asked if he would compete at the next Paralympics in Rio. He said: "Yes, of course. Why not? The conditions are very similar there to Israeli and I still feel good."

He goes home from a bronze in the doubles to go with his silver in Beijing. Reflecting on London 2012, he added: "This is my third Paralympics and I have to say it is the best. The venues, the organisation, the volunteers and the ball boys - everything has been excellent."

As for his highlight of the Games, he said: "Beating double Olympic champion Peter Norfolk in the quarter-finals. It came as a very pleasant surprise."
