Sharpe: Victory was a long time coming

Sporting JLGB manager Gavin Sharpe praised his squad after clinching their first-ever piece of silverware with a thumping 5-1 win over Crumpsall in the Tony Cohen Memorial final.

Goals either side of half time from Jonny Davies and Danny Jacobs put JLGB in a strong position at Salford City FC. A superb strike from Michael Freedman gave Crumpsall hope but the two-goal advantage was soon restored when Alex Woolf set up Davies.

Sporting controlled the closing stages with Rafi Bloom on target twice to seal the win. Manager Gavin Sharpe said: "We thoroughly deserved to win. It's been a long time coming. Next year we will go after the title."

Crumpsall manager Zevi Saunders said: "We didn't do enough to win the game. We had a few chances but couldn't take them. Sporting were clinical."

Oakhill Lions progressed to the final of the Feldman Cup after Hyde Park' lost their appeal for fielding unregistered players in the semi-finals.

MJSL secretary Paul Rose said: "Hyde Park have persistently flouted our rules. There is sympathy with players but on this occasion there was no option with the raft of issues raised.

"Personally speaking as League Secretary and a Manchester FA Council member, the list of misdemeanours was the longest I have ever seen after 15 years' service on the MJSL board."

Philip Braham, Hyde Park's outgoing player-manager, accused the league of double standards as their opponents Oakhill had been fined for fielding ineligible players in the league on several occasions.

Braham said: "We had no choice but to play this game as we couldn't field a team so close to Pesach.

"Oakhill were only fined so I have to ask why are we getting reprimanded for one thing? Hyde Park probably won't be in the MJSL next season and I feel there will be no league soon because people will get frustrated with the way they deal with things."
