London Lions 4 Standon & Puckeridge 2

London Lions turned on the style once again as they beat 4th placed Standon & Puckeridge 4-2 at Rowley Lane.

When the Lions are good they are very good and if they can just fine tune their possession and passing of the ball to a far more consistent level then they could be exceptional.

The first 25 minutes was a little disjointed as both teams looked to get a foot hold on the game. It was the visitors that drew first blood with an Adam Myeroff own goal giving them the lead.

That goal was the kick the Lions needed to step up the tempo and play the football they have become renowned for in recent months.

The Lions midfield of Rob Glass, Ben Lampert and Ben Lauffer finally started to get on top of the game and the Lions equaliser had class written all over it.

Great build up play involving five Lions players ended with Dominique Cheniart finishing exquisitely to draw Lions level.

Eddie Manson at left-back was having an excellent game and on a rare break forward he had a good chance to put the Lions in front but he shot just inches over the bar.

Just before the break the Lions did go in front courtesy of another Cheniart special. Again a fine passing move released the dangerous Cheniart and he again finished with breathtaking accuracy.

A fantastic 15 minute spell in the second-half killed off the brave visitors who by now were simply chasing shadows. Step up the prolific Adam Stolerman who was back to his best helping himself to two more goals.

Ben Ellis was then introduced after some impressive recent displays for the reserves and could have helped himself to two goals if he had had a little more composure in front of goal.

With the game drawing to a close a lapse of concentration in the Lions rear guard allowed Standon to score a second but it was little more then a mere consolation.

Going back top of the league after this win Gold said "That was more like us today! In recent weeks we have been a little of our game in terms of our passing and movement but today after a slow start we really showed a lot of class"

"I don't usually single out individuals for praise but I thought Eddie and Dominique were excellent today especially the latter. His movement, pace, strength, football ability and eye for goal make him a real handful. "He has had his critics over the last few seasons in terms of his temperament but on this form he is unstoppable".

"He should most certainly be considered for the Open Maccabiah squad if there is still time for him to be involved or looked at because their can't be many better".
