Israelis handed tough draw at Wimbledon

Shahar Peer’s hopes of reaching the world’s top 10 received a blow when she was given a tough first round match against former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic at Wimbledon.

Seeded 13 for the grand slam, which starts on Monday, Peer will be looking to avoid her second consecutive first-round defeat following her elimination from the ATP AEGON tournament at Eastbourne.

This week, Peer told the JC: "I feel I can beat anyone, including the Williams sisters. There is much more aggression and strength in my game this year, both physical and emotional. I have only just turned 23 so I'm confident that I will reach the top 10."

The pair have met twice before with Peer the victor on both occasions but she will be up against it against the 2008 French Opener winner who reached the last at SW19 in 2007. Ivanovic is currently ranked 45.

Dudi Sela will need to overcome the odds when he takes on 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.

Ranked 60, Sela reached the fourth round last year and beat Youzhny in a Davis Cup quarter-final last summer

American qualifier Jesse Levine has been drawn against 20th seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain.

In the doubles, 14th seeds Peer and Monica Niculescu take on the Bondarenko sisters.

In the men’s doubles, fresh from his victory at the AEGON Championships title at Queen's, Jonathan Erlich partners Dusan Vemic. They line up against Martin Damm and Filip Polasek.

Eighth seeds Andy Ram & Julian Knowle take on Eric Butorac & Rajeev Ram.

Peer teams up with Monica Niculescu against Alona Bondarenko & Kateryna Bondarenko in the Ladies doubles.
