I didn’t see exit signs, says Jacobson

Joe Jacobson admits he was shocked to be released by Shrewsbury Town.

The former Wales under-21 star was named Supporters’ Player of the Season, but he was released by new manager

Micky Mellon after the team was relegated to League 2, despite a late flurry of goals from the left-back.

Jacobson said: "It's a blow and to be honest, I was a little surprised by the decision.

"I captained the team for a few games towards the end of the season, but that's life."

Former boss Mike Jackson, who will assist Mellon next season, told Jacobson, 27, that the club were letting him go. "The new boss released virtually everyone aged over 21. He wants his own players."

Reflecting on last three years, Jacobson said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club. I’ve experienced both ends of the scale – with promotion and now relegation.

"I've played in some big cup games, including Arsenal at the Emirates, and have liked living in the area.

"I've always had a great rapport with the fans who have sent me some lovely messages on Twitter, but now it’s time to move on.

"Traditionally, not a lot happens during the first few weeks in the transfer window, so I’m excited that I’ll have an interesting summer."
