Haifa reach Champions League knockout round

articlemain

A first-half strike from Idan Vered enabled Maccabi Haifa to book a place in Friday's Champions League Knockout round as they beat Slovenian champions Maribor on Wednesday night.

Leading 2-1 from the first leg in Israel, Haifa took only 10 minutes to extend their advantage when Vered found the net in the third qualifying round second leg.

Maribor set up a grandstand finish when captain Marcos equalised but Haifa ran out 3-2 winners on aggregate.

Both teams missed chances in a nail-biting finale with Maribor going close from a corner in stoppage time.

Tomorrow's Champions League draw takes place in Nyon.
