Communal players fly high in Hornets’ nest

Maccabi GB’s annual football event, Community Kick Off, took place at Vicarage Road, home to the Championship side Watford.

In its sixth year, the event featured a junior competition when 24 teams of players aged nine-15 battled it out.

There were some notable performances from the HMH teams, London Maccabi Lions, Brady Maccabi and Kenton Maccabi who clearly relished the opportunity to shine on the big stage.

The Under 13s and 15s tournament included strong performances with Pinner, HMH, London Maccabi Lions and Kenton Maccabi all impressing.

The second part of the day featured the Open tournament. Maccabi GB, Port Vale, B.F.G and Goldcrown FC contested the semi-finals with Port Vale and Goldcrown making it to the final. Port Vale, lead by European Maccabi Games star James Gershfield, were the eventual winners.

Jo Webber, MGB events co-ordinator, said: “The event was a huge success with more than 700 people engaged throughout the day. In addition, there were a further 300 footballers at the trials to represent Team GB at next summer’s Maccabiah Games, ensuring that more than 1,000 Jewish people participated in Maccabi GB events across the day from the ages of eight to 55.”
