Belmont & Edgware set up a trip to Manchester with a Maccabi National Knockout Cup quarter-final victory over Southgate Synagogue.

Deputising for Ashley Connick as BECC captain, Jonathan Evans lost the toss to Richard Mitchell who elected to bat. Warren Averbuch (1-30) bowled a hostile opening spell, picking up a wicket thanks to a sharp catch in the gully by Cliff Horowitz.

Evans then effected a run-out with a direct hit from the boundary to leave Southgate reeling. Evans (1-28) had opened the bowling, but made way for Jonny Feigenbaum who tied the Southgate batsmen in knots in a probing spell. He finished with 3-22, which included a magnificent slip catch from a flying Evans.

Feigenbaum was well supported by Daniel Geey (1-36), Joel Phillips (1-36) and Ryan Monk (1-8). Richard Mitchell helped Southgate to rally from 67-5 after 20 overs, scoring a gutsy unbeaten 32 to drag his team to 165-9 from their 40 overs.

Cliff Horowitz, who had a back operation over the winter, opened the innings with Daniel Abrahams, and immediately looked comfortable. Abrahams, unfortunately, did not and fell for 0.

Feigenbaum joined Horowitz and together they played very sensibly, putting on a partnership of 83 before Feigenbaum was dismissed for 31. Phillips helped Horowitz take the score to 99 before he was removed, and Paul Levy played a short cameo innings before he departed for 14.

Horowitz had by now passed 50 and was joined by the ubiquitous Evans with the score at 130-4. Evans found the gaps and the pair ran brilliantly together, taking BECC to victory with more than five overs to spare.

A trip to face South Manchester in the semi-final awaits BECC at the beginning of August.
