Never forget the Rachmanus spirit

articlemain

VIt never ceases to amaze what happens to some of the world’s finest sportsmen when they cross the thin white line. And even though the prizes on offer are considerably smaller in the amateur game, unsavoury events take place regularly. All in the name of victory and pride.

Some come over all possessed, making irrational decisions and doing things they later regret. Indeed I’ve played in the same teams as some of these characters whose actions have, at times, let their teammates down.

Respect is earned by being gracious in victory and in defeat. We mustn’t forget the Rachmanus spirit is the raison d’être for Maccabi sport.

* Having played in goal behind Michael Sacks, it’s no surprise that Tony Gold has taken the Team Maccabi GB defender to Takeley FC.

Sacks is right up there with the very best Jewish centre-backs around. He has attended numerous international Maccabi events and is as solid as they come.

The former Manchester United academy star has all the qualities you need in a defender — he’s big, commanding, brave and a leader. Indeed 11 Michael Sacks’s would win you most games.

* There are key encounters in league and cup in the latest round of MGBSFL matches on Sunday, with the tie between Oakwood A and Faithfold A arguably the pick of the bunch.

The Oaks have put together an excellent squad, and with Anthony Kintish, Dan Geey, Bobby Cousins, Josh Bentley and Adam Levine set to return following the 5-1 cup win over Hendon B, last season’s double winners will have a real battle on their hands. Asked for his thoughts on the game, Oakwood joint-manager Ric Blank said: "We’re ready!"

* Team Maccabi GB managers Rob Richman and Jon Green will hold the first trial for the European Maccabi football Trophy Open football team at Rowley Lane on January 26 from 6.15pm-8pm. They are looking for good quality players who are keen on representing Great Britain against a number of other top European nations.

Anyone interested should apply via www.maccabigb.org/emft.

* Belmont & Edgware are looking to get in touch with former members ahead their 40th anniversary celebration event.

The club are also in the process of planning a commemorative ‘Past and Present’ match against Old Lyonians on June 29. For details, contact Ronnie Palester at ronnie.palester@hotmail.co.uk.
