The discovery of almost 100 pages of old burial records at the Montefiore Endowment offices relating to Rams-gate Jewish Cemetery has cast a new light on the Jewish population in east Kent in Victorian and Edwardian times.
With the help of Rabbi Cliff Cohen of Thanet and District Reform, who has been translating Hebrew lettering on the cemetery's gravestones, two non-Jewish local history enthusiasts are producing a book of their findings.
This is the third such collaboration between Benedict Kelly, the new keeper of the Montefiore Synagogue and Mausoleum, and Gerald Tripp, chairman of the Ramsgate Montefiore Heritage. Mr Kelly said that with the help of newspaper obituaries they have been able to produce a picture of the community.
Ramsgate Jewish community spokesman Godfrey Fischer said: "This is an excellent venture."
