More than one million people have visited Auschwitz so far in 2015, the highest number ever recorded in the first seven months of a year.

The Auschwitz museum has estimated that, by the end of the year, the number of visitors will be above the 1.53 million people who toured the site last year.

The introduction of a booking system, and regulation of the number of visitors on site at any one time, would reduce concerns about overcrowding. Seven years ago, it was predicted that around £50m would be needed to preserve the death camp and fund repairs.

Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: “It is incredible that one million people have already visited Auschwitz this year, showing that 70 years on from the liberation of the camp, people are increasingly aware of the significance of this site as a representation of one of the darkest parts of European history. We are proud that of this number, thousands are young people from Britain who visit the camp as part of our Lessons from Auschwitz Project.”
